Hello in the past month I’ve come across classical music. I’ve discovered no other music makes me feel the way classical does, just this pure feeling of euphoria comes over me. I’ve only listened to the major stuff Mozart( my favorite being his in g minor) the Goldberg variation bach all that jazz however I really want to get into classical now. I have no idea where to start tho I know I want to listen to Beethoven and some other names that that I may have not heard of other then the big 3 or 4. Thank you
Hello all! I’m a writer, and have been working on my latest project for a few months now. Bach’s Goldberg Variations are so important to the text (for reasons I won’t share because it’d be too long to explain, but I’d love to share in a private message) and I was wondering if there are any score studies out that there will explain (for me, someone who knows virtually nothing about music theory) that structure behind each variation and their styles etc. I already own a copy of Peter Williams Bach: The Goldberg Variations published by Cambridge Music Handbooks, but it doesn’t really go too into depth on the structure. If this bit of info helps, I’m looking to mimic the structure of GV in a novel, so for instance if the variation I’m mimicking is a canon, then I’d have to find a way to have the writing match characteristics of a canon. Anything is helpful, thank you!

The Goldberg variations were first published in 1741, when Bach about 56 years old (in the last decade of his life). They’re named as such because a man named Johann Goldberg, a super skilled keyboardist, was likely the first one to perform it. The Goldberg Variations were originally written for harpsichord. Bach’s reputation as a fine composer reached the ears of Kaiserling, so Goldberg was sent to him to be well tutored. When Bach heard of the plight of Goldberg’s boss, he penned the work. It was a genre of music into which he had never before ventured, thinking variations almost a form of musical ‘sheep counting’ (in the most respectful Explore our masterpiece guide to Bach’s ‘Goldberg Variations’ featuring Lang Lang’s studio and live recordings of the monumental work.
